Ensuring our formulations are sensitive to the world around us, we've explore alternative options to copper, a metal found to be harmful to the environment. Our greener formulations deliver dependable, silent and clean braking each and every time.
All current Silencer Professional formulations are copper compliant to 2021, with metallics and ceramics compliant right through to 2025 and beyond. On each box of Silencer Friction, you'll see a LeafMark designation, providing you with the knowledge that you are making a environmentally friendly choice.
Background on the testing - in 2010, the states of California and Washington both enacted legislation that require brake pads, sold or installed in both states, to have reduced levels of copper and other heavy metals.
The legislation was ratified based on claims from environmental groups and regulators that as brake pads wear down, deposits of copper and other metals are left on roadways and are eventually washed into streams and rivers, subsequently impacting the environment.
Manufacturers of brake pads are now required to test and register friction materials in their products. They are also required to display compliance information on friction materials edge codes and friction material packaging.
To help consumers understand which of the three levels of compliance a brake pad has reaches, compliance level information is marked on the brake pads. A new set of trademarks called "LeadMarks" (created by the Brake Manufacturers Council), will appear on the packaging.
There are three different LeafMarks:
The LeafMark™ is a trademark of The Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association. For more information on friction material registration regulations, LeafMarks and their use, visit NSF at http://www.nsf.org/services/by-industry/automotive/friction-material/friction-material-registration.
